What is Zi Wei Da Xian?
Zi Wei Da Xian (zǐ wēi dà xiàn), often shortened to "Da Xian," is a ten-year luck cycle in Zi Wei Dou Shu. Each Da Xian activates a "Da Xian Palace"—the palace that primarily influences the native during that decade. The entire Da Xian trajectory begins from the Life Palace and proceeds clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the native's gender and the yin-yang quality of the year stem: yang male / yin female go clockwise, yin male / yang female go counterclockwise. The cycle moves one palace every ten years until the native has traversed all twelve palaces.
The core significance of Da Xian is that it provides a temporal structure: the chart is not a static image but a dynamic system whose center of gravity shifts over time. A native's main arena in youth may be the Parents Palace, in young adulthood the Life Palace or Spouse Palace, in midlife the Career or Wealth Palace, and in old age the Fortune or Health Palace. With each new Da Xian, the energy configuration, tendencies toward good or ill fortune, and primary life concerns all change accordingly. The introduction of Da Xian gives Zi Wei Dou Shu a fairly granular capacity for period analysis.
How to find your Zi Wei Da Xian
After the chart is cast, the Da Xian trajectory is generated automatically:
- Determine the Five Elements Bureau of birth: The "Five Elements Bureau" (Water-2, Wood-3, Metal-4, Earth-5, Fire-6) in Zi Wei Dou Shu is determined by the placement of the Zi Wei star—this sets the age at which the Da Xian begin.
- Find the starting age: The number of the Five Elements Bureau is the starting age—Water-2 Bureau starts at age 2, Wood-3 at 3, Metal-4 at 4, Earth-5 at 5, Fire-6 at 6.
- Determine the Da Xian direction: Yang male / yin female go clockwise; yin male / yang female go counterclockwise.
- Read the current Da Xian Palace: Subtract the starting age from the current age, divide by 10, and take the floor—this gives the ordinal number of the current Da Xian.
- Examine the Da Xian chart: The main stars, auxiliary stars, baleful stars, and Four Transformations in the Da Xian Palace—plus the new Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem—constitute the luck configuration for that decade.
In unMing's Zi Wei tool, after the chart is cast, the current Da Xian Palace, the direction of future Da Xian, and the main energy configurations of each segment are automatically marked.
Types and key features of Zi Wei Da Xian
Da Xian are classified by the palace they occupy and the direction of movement.
Clockwise Da Xian—yang male / yin female
For yang males (males born in years with stems Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren) and yin females (females born in years with stems Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui), the Da Xian move clockwise: the first Da Xian is in the Life Palace, the second in the Siblings Palace (or the adjacent palace depending on the starting method), the third in the Spouse Palace, and so on through all twelve palaces. Those on a clockwise path generally reach "social arena" palaces such as Spouse, Wealth, and Career before midlife.
Counterclockwise Da Xian—yin male / yang female
For yin males (males born in years with stems Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui) and yang females (females born in years with stems Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren), the Da Xian move counterclockwise—from the Life Palace toward the Parents Palace, Fortune Palace, and Property Palace. Those on a counterclockwise path spend the early years in palaces related to parents and family, and reach the career arena only in midlife or later.
Classification by Da Xian Palace
The palace occupied by each Da Xian directly determines the theme of that decade: Da Xian in the Life Palace—a period of self-awareness; Da Xian in the Parents Palace—a period of influence from elders; Da Xian in the Fortune Palace—a period of spiritual growth; Da Xian in the Property Palace—a period of family and assets; Da Xian in the Career Palace—a period of career acceleration; Da Xian in the Friends Palace—a period of network expansion; Da Xian in the Travel Palace—a period of movement and change; Da Xian in the Health Palace—a period of health concerns and stress; Da Xian in the Wealth Palace—a period of financial focus; Da Xian in the Children Palace—a period of children or creative output; Da Xian in the Spouse Palace—a period dominated by relationships; Da Xian in the Siblings Palace—a period of siblings or peers.
Triggering of the Four Transformations by the Da Xian
The Heavenly Stem of the Da Xian (the stem of the pillar in which the Da Xian Palace sits) activates a new set of Four Transformations—Transformation to Lu (Prosperity), Transformation to Quan (Authority), Transformation to Ke (Prestige), and Transformation to Ji (Obstruction)—which fall on different palaces of the natal chart. This is where the real dynamism of Da Xian lies: the overlay of the natal Four Transformations and the Da Xian Four Transformations determines the specific energetic keynote of the decade.
Subdivision by Minor Limit and Annual Flow
Beyond Da Xian, Zi Wei Dou Shu also uses the "Minor Limit" (a simplified annual luck cycle that changes palaces each year) and the "Annual Flow" (which activates the Four Transformations based on the year's Heavenly Stem). Together, the three form Zi Wei Dou Shu's fine-grained temporal analysis: Da Xian is the ten-year unit, while the Minor Limit and Annual Flow are the one-year units.
How Zi Wei Da Xian shapes the native
Da Xian is the basic measure of the native's life-stage transitions.
On the decade's keynote
The life domain represented by the Da Xian Palace is the main arena for that decade—when the Da Xian moves to the Spouse Palace, marriage becomes the focus; when it moves to the Career Palace, career becomes the focus; when it moves to the Health Palace, health and stress take center stage. The keynote is not exclusive, but it is the most prominent.
On the level of good and ill fortune
The combination of main stars, auxiliary stars, and baleful stars in the Da Xian Palace itself constitutes the basic atmosphere of the decade—many auspicious stars mean a smooth ten years; many baleful stars mean a grinding ten years. When the Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian (the Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji activated by the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem on other palaces of the natal chart) are added, a complete Da Xian reading emerges.
On the timing of major life events
Marriage, starting a business, having children, major job changes, buying a house, moving—these major life events often correspond to the switch of a Da Xian or to a specific Annual Flow within a Da Xian. For example, when the Da Xian moves to the Spouse Palace and Transformation to Lu enters the Spouse Palace, it is a high-probability period for marriage; when the Da Xian moves to the Career Palace and Transformation to Quan enters the Career Palace, it is a critical period for career breakthroughs.
Interaction with the natal chart
Da Xian does not operate independently—it is always overlaid on the natal chart. A native with a high-quality natal structural configuration (格局 gé jú) can hold their ground even during an "unfavorable" Da Xian; a native with a weak natal configuration may struggle to fully realize even a "good" Da Xian. The natal chart and Da Xian function as substance and function—neither can be omitted.
Classical sources: Da Xian in the canon
The movement of Da Xian marks the stages of a person's life; each cycle lasts ten years, accumulating through the twelve palaces to complete the circuit.
大限之行,乃人生之阶段也;每十年一运,累至十二宫而周。
— General principle of Da Xian in Zi Wei Dou Shu (see Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu)
This basic rule points to the essence of Da Xian—the division of life into stages. The ten-year cycle is neither random nor uniform; it is a structured depiction of life's natural rhythm: childhood, youth, adulthood, middle age, and old age each have their own arena. Zi Wei Dou Shu uses Da Xian to translate this rhythm into movement through the twelve palaces.
The natal chart is the substance, the Da Xian is the function; the Da Xian is the substance, the Annual Flow is the function.
本命为体,大限为用;大限为体,流年为用。
— General principle of temporal levels in Zi Wei Dou Shu
Analogous to the "life configuration / Major Life Cycle / Annual Flow" hierarchy in Ba Zi, Zi Wei Dou Shu also has three layers: the natal chart, the Da Xian, and the Annual Flow. The natal chart is the foundation, the Da Xian is the ten-year arena, and the Annual Flow is the specific events of a single year. Analyzing a native's life requires moving layer by layer from the natal chart to the Da Xian to the Annual Flow—not looking at only one layer.
Common misconceptions about Zi Wei Da Xian
A common error: Treating the Da Xian Palace as "the whole ten years"—if the Da Xian Palace is good, the entire decade is good. In fact: The Da Xian Palace is only the main arena of the decade—within the same ten years, there are ten Annual Flows, each with its own good and ill fortune. Sometimes the Da Xian as a whole is favorable, but a particular Annual Flow within it encounters baleful stars and clashes, still bringing turbulence; sometimes the Da Xian as a whole is unfavorable, but a particular Annual Flow encounters auspicious stars and Transformation to Lu, still offering bright spots. The Da Xian sets the tone; the Annual Flow places the pieces—only by looking at both does a complete picture emerge.
A common error: Looking only at the main stars of the natal chart and ignoring the new Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian. In fact: The precision of Zi Wei Dou Shu lies precisely in the triggering of the Four Transformations by the Da Xian—the same natal chart, when the Da Xian reaches the same palace in different decades, will have different triggered Four Transformations and different keynotes because the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem differs. Looking only at the natal chart and ignoring the Da Xian is equivalent to ignoring the dimension of time.
A common error: Believing that clockwise Da Xian are good and counterclockwise Da Xian are bad (or the reverse). In fact: Clockwise and counterclockwise are merely directional differences and have nothing to do with the quality of fate. What matters is which specific palaces are reached, the configuration of each palace, and where the Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem fall. Judging good or bad based solely on direction is a severe oversimplification of Da Xian.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zi Wei Da Xian the same as the Major Life Cycle in Ba Zi?
Both are ten-year luck cycles, but their calculation methods and modes of operation differ. In Ba Zi, the Major Life Cycle is calculated from the Month Pillar, with yang male / yin female going clockwise and yin male / yang female going counterclockwise. In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the Da Xian is calculated from the Life Palace, also with yang male / yin female going clockwise and yin male / yang female going counterclockwise. Both govern the ten-year keynote, but they use entirely different symbols and analytical methods.
How is the starting age of the Da Xian determined?
In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the starting age of the Da Xian is determined by the Five Elements Bureau of the birth year: Water-2 Bureau starts at age 2, Wood-3 at 3, Metal-4 at 4, Earth-5 at 5, Fire-6 at 6. After the starting age, the Da Xian Palace changes every ten years.
Does a bad Da Xian Palace mean ten years of bad luck?
Not necessarily. The Da Xian Palace is the main arena of the decade—many auspicious stars in the palace mean smooth luck; many baleful stars and Transformation to Ji mean obstructed luck. But the final assessment of good and ill fortune must also consider: the Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian, the relationship between the Da Xian and the natal chart, and the coordination of specific Annual Flows within the decade. The Da Xian is only the broad framework; the quality of any given year depends on other variables.
Does Da Xian only look at the Da Xian Palace alone?
No. The Da Xian Palace is the main arena—but one must also examine the three directions and four alignments of the Da Xian Palace, the new Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem, and the relationship between the main stars sitting in the Da Xian Palace and the natal chart. Interpreting Da Xian in Zi Wei Dou Shu essentially means overlaying a "Da Xian chart" on the original natal chart and reading the combination.
What does it mean when the Da Xian reaches the Life Palace?
When the Da Xian Palace overlaps with the natal Life Palace, it is a period of "returning to the root": the native will express the keynote of their Life Palace more authentically during this decade. If the Life Palace itself has a high-quality structural configuration and strong main stars, this period is often a life peak; if the Life Palace has a low-quality configuration and baleful stars, this period exposes the typical challenges of the native's character.
See your Zi Wei Da Xian in unMing
unMing's Zi Wei Dou Shu tool automatically displays the current Da Xian Palace, the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem, and the Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian after the chart is cast. The Da Xian trajectory is visualized to show which palaces you will reach in the coming decades. A good starting point for observation: look at the palace where your current Da Xian sits—this tells you which life domain is the main arena of this decade; then look at where the Four Transformations triggered by the Da Xian's Heavenly Stem fall—this gives the specific keynote of the decade (whether it is a year of opportunities driven by Transformation to Lu, or a year of persistence driven by Transformation to Ji).
